India have suffered yet another massive blow as all-rounder Washington Sundar is suffering from a rib injury, following which he has been ruled out of the ODI series against New Zealand. It will be a sign of concern as Sundar is also part of the T20 World Cup 2026 squad for India. The main event starts in less than a month. In the first ODI, Washington Sundar bowled five overs for 27 runs and walked off midway through the New Zealand innings and did not return to the field on Sunday. Despite the discomfort, he later came out to bat at No. 8 and helped India win the match but it was clear that he was unable to run and had immense pain while attempting to run.
This news was confirmed officially today by the BCCI. "Washington has been ruled out
due to the onset of discomfort in his left lower rib area," a BCCI official informed. Apart from Washington Sundar, Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was also ruled out of the ongoing series after suffering a side strain which he suffered on the eve of the first game. Middle order batter, Tilak Varma also is injured unavailable for the first three T20Is against New Zealand due to a groin injury that required surgery.
During the post match presentation Indian ODI captain Shubman Gill had given an update on Washington following India's win on Sunday. "Washington Sundar has a side strain and will go for a scan after the match," Gill said. Read More | India beat New Zealand by four wickets in the first ODI

Sundar is part of the squad for T20Is and India will be hoping he can recover soon. India won the opening ODI and the next match is set to be played on January 14 at Rajkot.
