Former England skipper Michael Vaughan thinks that the Mumbai Indians would pursue former Royal Challengers Bengaluru star in the next IPL season. The cricketer-turned-commentator was speaking ahead of the Mumbai Indians’ clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders on May 20, which resulted in the home team securing a four-wicket win over the five-time champions. Ahead of the fixture, the Englishman said that he believes the Blue and Gold brigade would want to bring their ex player, Cameron Green.
"There will be many changes in their (MI) squad. Cameron Green has already played for them, and I won't be surprised if he's back with them next year,” Vaughan said. He added, "It's impossible to predict who's going to play. They are out so they may try
anybody. It'll be a great opportunity for anyone who plays. Though they've not had a great season, playing well for MI, it's a great franchise to be part of. Of all the franchises to play for, this is one worth staying with. Particularly, the overseas players will be desperate for a performance to stay in MI."
Notably, Green was purchased by the Eden Gardens-based franchise for a whopping ₹25.20 crores. However, the Aussie has had an inconsistent campaign in his maiden ongoing season with the franchise. After a flop start to the season, he has only scored 320 runs in 13 games while scalping seven wickets. Green recorded an economy of 10.65 and had the best bowling figures of 2/23.
On the other hand, the Nita Ambani-owned franchise endured a disappointing season and were able to win only four out of 13 games.
Mumbai have got too many chefs in the kitchen: Cameron Green suggests MI to release Hardik Pandya
The former cricketer backed the idea of releasing MI skipper Hardik Pandya and bringing in Green to the squad. Pandya led the Gujarat Titans to the 2022 championship and reached the final in the following year. However, he was then traded to the Mumbai Indians, and was handed over the leadership reins. Vaughan commented on it and said that he couldn’t understand MI’s move because they already had plenty of leaders in the team.
"No. I have seen enough. I didn't really see the dynamic of bringing him back. He was doing well with the Gujarat Titans, won a title there with a different set of players and a different coach. I feel Mumbai have got too many chefs in the kitchen," Vaughan said on Cricbuzz. "If he wants to carry on as captain, then he'd better be with a fresh set of captains. Maybe KKR. Kolkata will be looking for a new captain. That is why the Green-Hardik swap," he added. Notably, in the game against the Kolkata Knight Riders, Pandya could only score 26 runs in 27 balls and failed to pick a wicket in the two overs he bowled.
