Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has heaped praise on Virat Kohli following the star batter’s remarkable run in the ongoing ODI series against South Africa, expressing strong belief that Kohli can eventually reach the unprecedented milestone of 100 international centuries. Kohli has been in sensational form, delivering back-to-back hundreds in the first two games of the series and showcasing a level of intent that left cricket fans stunned.
Gavaskar highlighted that Kohli’s approach in the ODIs resembled the fearless aggression usually seen in the T20 format. “Very rarely have we seen the T20 avatar of Virat Kohli in ODI cricket, but this is special,” Gavaskar said during a post-match show. He pointed out that Kohli’s clarity in shot selection
and attacking mindset have added a fresh dimension to India’s top-order.
Kohli’s series tally now includes two centuries and a quickfire half-century, helping India dominate South Africa. More importantly, he appears to be batting with complete freedom — without the burden of expectations that once seemed to weigh heavily on him. His recent performances have reignited the discussion around whether he can become the first player in history to score 100 international hundreds, a record currently held solely by Sachin Tendulkar with 100 Tons.
As things stand, Kohli has 84 international hundreds to his name and continues to defy age and pressure with remarkable consistency. Gavaskar believes that the hunger, fitness, and mental strength Kohli possesses make the milestone achievable. “If anyone in world cricket can reach 100 hundreds, it’s Virat Kohli. His discipline and desire are unmatched, and he is still far from finished,” Gavaskar added.
Cricket experts caution that the journey ahead is challenging, considering international scheduling, form cycles and physical demands. However, with two more years expected in peak competitive cricket, and major tournaments lined up, Kohli’s dream remains alive.
For now, his focus is on guiding India to a clean sweep against South Africa — but the world is watching closely as the chase for history intensifies.
