With the Indian cricket team now eyeing the five-match T20I series, which is set to commence from October 29 in Canberra, they recently went down against Australia in the three-match ODI series by 1-2
margin. While the hosts claimed the series after winning the first two ODIs, India bounced back in the game in the final match to get a consolation win under their name. While the match had its moments with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stitching a crucial stand and guiding the side over the line, there were also signs of worry.
Amidst it was Shreyas Iyer, who sustained a near-fatal injury while attempting a running catch of Alex Carey in the third ODI in Sydney. Although, Iyer produced a brilliant catch, but in the process injured his rib cage. While the initial reports revealed “jerk”, but the Board on Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) later confirmed internal bleeding, affecting the spleen area.

A medical update by the BCCI mentioned, “Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.” But recent reports have made a startling revelation which states, Shreyas Iyer fainted in the dressing room and his vital parameters were alarmingly low.
Seeing this, he was soon rushed to the hospital with the scans later revealing that he has sustained “laceration injury to the spleen ”. "The team doctor and physio didn't take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He's a tough lad and should be fine soon," the source added.
If reports are to be believed, Iyer will remain under observation for two to seven days, depending on his recovery and is likely to remain out of action for a considerable timeline.
