The Charith Asalanka-led side defeated Afghanistan by six wickets to confirm their place in the Super Fours, along with Bangladesh, who finished second in the Group B standings.
With a win, Sri Lankan cricket team was also surrounded by a devastating news, which left the side in despair. After the match, Sri Lanka team was visibly shaken by the sudden demise of spinner Dunith Wellalage’s father. However, the news reportedly came during mid-match, but the cricketer was informed after the team’s victory in Abu Dhabi.
Mohammad Nabi shocked by Wellalage’s father’s demise; video goes viral

going viral on social media, in another instance, veteran Afghan cricketer Mohammad Nabi’s video is also making rounds on the internet. Nabi, who had a brilliant outing in Afghanistan’s final Asia Cup 2025 match, which saw him score 60 runs off just 22 deliveries including five sixes off Wellalage, was left visibly in shock after the news reached him.
In the viral footage, Nabi is being informed by journalists of Wellalage’s father’s demise. On knowing, the veteran all-rounder was seen in a worried expression. As a reporter informed, “Dunith Wellalage’s father passed away,” Nabi quickly reponded, “Father? How?” Meanwhile, the reporter further informs the reason, to which, the veteran cricketer in shock asks, “Really? Heart attack?”

Shortly after knowing of the same, the Afghan cricketer took to X to express his condolences to the young cricketer. “Heartfelt condolences to Dunith Wellalage and his family on the loss of his beloved father. Stay strong Brother,” Nabi wrote on X.
While Afghanistan will head home after their exit from the Men’s Asia Cup 2025, Sri Lanka will next lock horns with Bangladesh in the Super Fours on Saturday, September 20 in Dubai.
