Viswanathan Anand unintentionally flagged himself in Rapid game on day two of Clutch Chess: The Legends tie
One of the biggest talking points of the Clutch Chess: The Legends tie was from the second day when Viswanathan Anand lost the first Rapid game on time despite being in a winning position. The Indian Grandmaster seemingly forgot about the clock before flagging himself, which Garry Kasparov immediately noticed and told his counterpart before reacting in disbelief as to what transpired in front of him.
After the conclusion of the games on day two of the Clutch Chess: The Legends tie, Woman Grandmaster (WGM) Anastasiya Karlovich asked Garry Kasparov about why he said sorry to Viswanathan Anand after the flagging incident, which she had noticed on the live stream. In response, the Russian said, as per Indian Express, “I said I’m sorry because that’s not (to win from losing position on time). It’s a lost position and I deserved to be punished.”
Viswanathan Anand said the following about the aforementioned loss, “I saw at one point I had 1 minute 26 seconds and then I don’t know I should have looked at the clock again. I just completely forgot and I was so absorbed in this.”
