The 2025 season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) might have culminated long back in March with Mumbai Indians Women lifting their second title after winning the inaugural edition in 2023, the talks around the next season are already on. While several reports claimed the next edition to be played a little early as compared to the three previous seasons, recent reports have confirmed the update.
It is to be noted that as per the blueprint laid down by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for women’s cricket keeping in mind the Future Tours Programme (FTP), a dedicated window will be allotted to the leagues around the world. As per it, the WPL was set between January-February while the Hundred Women’s tournament and the Women’s Big Bash League
(WBBL) are slotted to be held in August and November respectively.
WPL 2026 to be held in January: Reports
Normally being played in the February-March window, the five-team tournament is likely to see it shift to the January - February window. According to the reports citing Times of India (TOI), the fourth season is likely to be held in January due to the Men’s T20 World Cup, which is set to be played in India and Sri Lanka in February-March.
“The tournament is likely to start on January 6 or January 8, 2026,” a source close to the development told TOI. If so happens, the auction could also be held a month earlier as per its usual schedule.
Speaking of the tournament, the five team tournament, which came in existence in 2023, saw Harmanpreet Kaur-led MI Women win the inaugural season. They defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) Women by seven wickets at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. In the second edition, DC Women were once again handed a jolt as they finished as runners-up once again after being handed a defeat by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Women. In the third season, MI Women once again won, defeating DC Women by eight-run.
