Exactly two years ago on November 19, 2023, one of the most successful sides in Men’s Cricket World Cup - Australia, continued their dominant run as they defeated hosts, India in the final at the Narendra
Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad by six wickets to claim the ODI World Cup 2023 title. Coming into the final after beating South Africa by three wickets in the second-semi-final, Australia went on to beat the so far undefeated team.
For the unversed, Pat Cummins-led Australia won the toss and elected to field, thus inviting the hosts to put the score first on the board. The Rohit Sharma-led side could not get 240 runs on the board in their stipulated 50 overs with the skipper playing a 31-ball 47, whereas Virat Kohli (54) and KL Rahul (66) played key role with the bat. But in the run-chase, Australian players stood up as Travis Head smashed a 137 off 120 deliveries, along with Marnus Labuschagne, who played an unbeaten 58 off 110 deliveries to guide the side home in just 43 overs.
Records broken in ICC Cricket World Cup 2023
- With Australia taking on the podium, they lifted the trophy for the record sixth time, making them the most successful sides in the tournament. Notably, their first-ever win came in 1987 when Allan Border’s men downed England at the Eden Gardens.
- Moreover, Australia also registered most appearances in the finals of the tournament, this becoming the eighth appearance in 13 finals so far. India and England are the joint-second with four appearances each.
- Travis Head’s magnificent 137 helped him become only the seventh centurion in a World Cup final and second after Sri Lanka’s Aravinda de Silva to ton up in a chase.
- The finale also saw some viewership records been broken. During the ODI World Cup 2023 Final between India and Australia, the official live streaming platform Disney+ Hotstar has set the record high concurrent viewership of 5.4 crore on the platform. The moment happened when the Indian captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were batting together in the first powerplay stage against the Australians at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
