On October 29, 1972, Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden was born to Moya and Laurie Hayden in Knigaroy, Queensland. He broke into domestic cricket in 1991 and after two years of hard work for Queensland,
he got picked up in Australia’s ODI squad for the England tour in 1993. In the first ODI played in Manchester, he got the opportunity to open with Mark Taylor and scored 29 off 55. He also made his debut against South Africa in Johannesburg in 1994 but it was 2001, when he proved himself in both longer formats of the game. During Australia’s tour of India for three Tests, the left-handed batter emerged as the highest run-getter with 549 runs in six innings.
He continued his form in the ODI series as well. In the Aussie side’s 3-2 win, he chipped in with 303 runs with a hundred and two fifties in four matches. Hayden was a part of the Aussie side that won the World Cup in 2003 and 2007. In Australia’s fourth title triumph in 2007, Hayden played an instrumental role. The opener smashed 659 runs with three hundreds and a fifty in 11 matches and emerged as the highest run-getter in the competition. Hayden possesses the record of highest individual score in Tests with his 380-run knock against Zimbabwe in Perth in 2003. In January 2009, Hayden retired from international cricket playing his last Test against South Africa in Sydney. During his distinguished 16-year international career, he played 273 matches for Australia and scored 15066 runs.

Matthew Hayden also served Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) from 2008 to 2010. During this period, he scored 1117 runs in 34 matches at a strike rate of 135.55. In 2010, when Chennai won their maiden title under MS Dhoni, Hayden contributed 346 runs in 16 matches.

In 2012, Hayden retired from all forms of cricket after his appearance for Brisbane Heat against Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League 2011/12. After retiring from the sport, Hayden is active in the sport as a commentator.
