San Francisco Unicorns have announced that Shane Watson will not be serving the Major League Cricket(MLC) side as head coach anymore, as the former Australia all-rounder has resigned from his role. Watson’s
association with San Francisco started in 2023 and under his leadership, San Francisco played competitive cricket and concluded their 2024 season as runners-up. In 2025, their campaign ended in the playoffs. Watson, during his stint, emphasised on giving the opportunity to fresh faces.
Announcing his separation from San Francisco Unicorns, Watson released a statement which read, “It has been a true privilege to lead the San Francisco Unicorns over the last three seasons. I’m proud of what we accomplished and grateful for the opportunity to work with world-class stars and emerging talent in Major League Cricket.”
Unicorns issued a statement on Shane Watson’s decision
Unicorns have also issued a statement on Watson’s decision. CEO David White commended Watson’s efforts for the team. “Shane was the natural choice to be our first Head Coach, and he played a key role in building the Unicorns from the ground up. His professionalism and passion for the game have left a lasting legacy,” remarked White.
MLC’s fourth edition will be held from June 18 to July 18, 2026. The tournament’s format will be unchanged as it will feature six teams clashing against one another in 34 matches. In the previous season, MI New York became the champions for the second time after beating Washington Freedom in the final held in Grand Prairie. Unicorns’ campaign concluded in the Eliminator as they faced a two-wicket loss against MI New York.
