The countdown for the World Para Athletics Championships 2025 has officially begun. The event, set to take place from September 27 to October 5, 2025, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi, will reportedly witness over 2,200 athletes and support staff from 104 countries competing across 186 medal events, 101 for men, 84 for women, and one mixed event, 15 more than the previous edition in Kobe, Japan. Marking a landmark moment in India’s sporting history, India will host this event for the first time ever.
The Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) unveiled the official medals for the IndianOil New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships in a grand ceremony held in national capital. The unveiled medals, reportedly radiating the essence
of para-sport and Indian heritage, are a testament to the championship’s commitment to cultural pride and accessibility. The front side of each medal features intricate motifs inspired by traditional Indian art, centering on the championship’s name and iconic para-athletics symbols: a wheelchair racer, a discus thrower, and the lotus, India’s national flower, symbolizing purity and resilience.
The reverse side emphasizes inclusivity, incorporating Braille above the “New Delhi 2025” inscription, a lotus-inspired pattern, and bold modern geometric details. Completed with a vibrant blue ribbon, each medal encapsulates the spirit of athletic achievement and India’s warm hospitality. The design, as described by PCI officials, tells a story of courage, perseverance, and the triumph of the human spirit.

The ceremony also featured the launch of the championship’s official anthem, “Udaan Bhar,” a song with rap elements produced by Polaris Production in association with the PCI. The accompanying video showcases Indian para-athletes demonstrating their extraordinary talent, capturing the essence of resilience and inspiration central to the para-sport community. PCI President Devendra Jhajharia, a two-time Paralympic gold medallist, reportedly described the unveiling as “the beginning of a historic journey.” He added, “These medals celebrate not just victory but the ethos of effort, inclusivity, and resilience. Hosting athletes from 104 countries, New Delhi is poised to deliver a world-class championship that inspires all”.
Paul Fitzgerald, Head of World Para Athletics, echoed Jhajharia’s sentiments, highlighting the global significance of the event. “We are thrilled to see the first major championships of the new Paralympic cycle towards Los Angeles 2028 being hosted in New Delhi. The 2025 World Para Athletics Championships will be the largest international para-sport event ever held in India. The unveiling of these unique medals underscores the event’s commitment to inclusivity and cultural pride,” Fitzgerald reportedly said.
Indian Paralympic gold medalists Navdeep Singh and Praveen Kumar, who participated in the unveiling, expressed their pride and motivation for the upcoming event.
