England Cricket have announced that Luke Wright will step down from his position as England Men’s Selector following the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Wright had served in the role since November 2022
and has notified the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) that he will be moving on after more than three years of service. England recently lost the Ashes but Luke Wright has clarified that no one asked him to step down and this was his own decision as he wanted to spend time with family.
Director of England cricket, Rob Key expressed his disappointment over Wright’s decision to leave. Speaking about him Key said “I have absolutely loved working with Luke. His contribution to English cricket has been exceptional and I trust his judgment as much as anyone.”
The former England batter cited the personal demands of the job which includes specifically the extensive travel as the primary reason for his departure and noted that he wishes to spend more time with his young family. Luke Wright has played 101 matches in white ball cricket for England and has served as selector for just over three years.
Luke Wright said “The role demands significant travel and time away from home and with a young family, the time feels right to pass the baton on to the next person,”. He ended by saying that he looked forward with enthusiasm to whatever cricketing roles may come to him in the future. The upcoming T20 World Cup will be his last assignment.
