Harmanpreet Kaur-led India Women finally ended their long-awaited ICC ODI World Cup drought as they defeated South Africa Women in the summit clash of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 on Sunday,
November 2 in Navi Mumbai. After being put to bat first, the Women in Blue posted 298 runs at the loss of seven wickets in their stipulated 50 overs, courtesy a 78-ball 87 from Shafali Verma and key knocks from Smriti Mandhana (45) and Deepti Sharma (58).
During the run-chase, the Indian bowlers were just on point with Deepti Sharma once again proving her prowess with the ball. After a 58-run knock with the bat, Sharma starred, picking five wickets in her 9.3 overs to help restrict the Protean side to 246 in 45.3 overs. She was assisted by Shafali Verma, who picked two wickets whereas Shree Charani got one to her name.

While the celebrations began soon after Chloe Tryon’s wicket, a blitz run-out to dismiss Ayabonga Khaka and a catch by Harmanpreet Kaur off Deepti Sharma’s over of Nadine de Klerk sealed a win for the Indian women. The smiles not only spoke of the eager wait, the former Indian women cricketer who were present at the venue for the summit clash, also could not contain their emotions and ran to celebrate the iconic moment.

In one of the videos shared by the broadcasters of the tournament, former cricketers and legends of the game in Jhulan Goswami and Mithali joined the World Cup-winning side in the middle to soak in the celebrations. Moreover, the duo was also joined by Anjum Chopra and were left in tears. Soon after the legends were handed the trophy, they broke down in tears.
