Cricket, a sport which is vast expanding, has recently introduced a new format - Test Twenty. The sport which is in its age of innovation with the growing popularity of T20 cricket and fight to sustain
the longest format of the game - Test cricket, there have been several innovation in recent past with T10 and now the latest Test Twenty.
However, Test, ODI and T20I remain to be primary three formats, recently cricket got a boast with the new Test Twenty. Officially unveiled on October 16, Test Twenty is the brainchild of Gaurav Bahirvani, Executive Chairman of The One One Six Network. Although, it is poised to become the fourth international format, but will find a tough batter with T10, 100-ball tournament - The Hundred.
What is Test Twenty?
While this has been the talk since it has been unveiled, it also has got backing from several former cricketers including Sir Clive Lloyd, AB de Villiers, Harbhajan Singh and Matthew Hayden - who have also been named in the advisory board. While announcement came from South Africa legend - AB de Villiers, in this article, we’ll try and look at the basic rules of the Test Twenty competition.
As per the rules, the competition will see each match played across a single day, like an ODI match. The teams will play two innings each, meaning that a match will have four innings like a Test match, but the innings will be of 20 overs apiece. The competition will only be played by players within the age group of 13 to 19 with the criteria likely to be expanded in near future.
Moreover, the upcoming tournament will see six teams competing for the silverware - three from India and three representing Dubai, London and United States. Each team will consist of 16 players, with the first edition set to be played in India in January 2026.
