On this day, January 24, 2024: Brisbane Heat won their second BBL title as they beat Sydney Sixers by 54 runs at the SCG. Josh Brown was the player of the match as he took the Brisbane Heat to their second KFC BBL title to break the hearts of 43,153 home fans at SCG. This was Brisbane Heat’s second title since their first championship in 11 years, becoming just the third club after the Sixers and Perth Scorchers with multiple men’s Big Bash titles. Brisbane Heat were batting first and scored 166/8 in the first innings on the back of a quick half-century from Josh Brown. It was an excellent partnership between Brown and skipper Nathan McSweeney (33) again set the platform for the Heat after being asked to bat first, before 40 off 22 from Matthew
Renshaw lifted the visitors to 8-166 on a tricky surface.
Sean Abbot was the pick of the bowlers for Sydney Sixers as he took 4/32 in his four overs. At the half way mark it looked an above par total by the Heat on a tricky surface. It proved to be just that as Sydney Sixers struggled with the bat. Sixers lost quick wickets in the chase and found themselves 4/57 and it looked a very difficult to comeback from there.
Spencer Johnson bowled exceptionally well picking up four wickets while Bartlett was lethal with the new ball to scalp two wickets. In the end it was a bit too much for the Sydney Sixers as they were bowled out for 112. Brisbane Heat on the final were too good and won just their second title. To beat a team like Sixers who themselves have been goo in the past took a lot and they delivered.
This day will be very memorable for the Brisbane Heat fans as Brisbane won the match by 54 runs and it was one of the most memorable matches in the BBL and the finals belonged to Josh Brown and Spencer Johnson.
