Neeraj Chopra has qualified for the final of the men's javelin throw event of the World Athletics Championships 2025 in dominating style. He surpassed the qualification mark of 84.50m in his very first throw. He sent his spear to 84.85m in his first throw in the Group A of the qualification stage. In Group A, Chopra was clubbed with Germany’s Julian Weber, Trinbago’s Keshorn Walcott, Czech’s Jakub Vadlejch, and India’s Sachin Yadav. Weber also qualified with his exceptional throw of 87.21m. In the previous edition in Budapest, Chopra recorded a throw of 88.17m and bagged the gold medal, while Nadeem (87.82m), and Vadlejch (86.67m) had pulled off silver and bronze respectively.
This is the fifth time Neeraj Chopra qualified for the finals in just
one attempt in global tournaments. Neeraj’s compatriot Sachin Yadav has also qualified for the final. Yadav passed the qualification mark with his throw of 83.67m. Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem will also feature in the final as he registered a throw of 85.28m in the final attempt.
Four athletes from the Asian sub-continent will feature in the final
Besides Neeraj, Sachin, and Nadeem, Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage is another Asian name to show up in the final. Discussing other eight players, Australia’s Cameron McEntyre, USA’s Curtis Thompason, Germany’s Weber, Poland’s Dawid Wegner, Czech’s Jakub Vadlejch, Kenya’s Julius Yego, Grenada’s Anderson Peters, and Trinbago’s Walcott.
Pathirage was the last player to qualify for the final with his 82.8m throw. Chopra will strive to retain the title. Eyes will be set on his contest against Pakistan’s Nadeem, who defeated him in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris to win the gold medal.
