Jose Mourinho, regarded as one of the greatest manager in world football by many in the footballing fraternity, was the head coach of the Turkish club Fenerbahce since the year 2024. However, the Istanbul based club decided to sack Mourinho with immediate effect following the loss against Benfica 1-0 which led to them not qualifying for the UEFA Champions League (UCL) 2025-26 main draw.
However, in
the shocking turn of events, on Thursday, September 18, Benfica, who qualified for the UCL after emerging victorious against the Super Lig team, have officially announced Jose Mourinho as their new manager until the year 2027. This happened after the Eagles decided to sack their manager Bruno Lage following a shocking defeat against Azerbaijan side Qarabag FK 3-2 in the Champions League opening midweek just a couple of days ago. Mourinho, who hails from Portugal, will now be seen making a return to the UCL with the Portuguese side.
Mourinho set to face his former sides Chelsea and Real Madrid on his return to Champions League
Mourinho began his journey into coaching with Benfica in the year 2000. However, it did not end well for the 62-year-old as he decided to leave the club just 10 games into the season following a dispute with the former President of Benfica. The contract between Jose Mourinho and Benfica is a unique one as it gives an option for the Eagles to decide if they want to continue being the manager of the club following the end of the 2025-26 season. This gives them a span of ten days to decide if they want the special one to lead the club next summer.
Mourinho has a knack of winning trophies throughout his career managing teams like Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and the list goes on. He could potentially be the one to lead Benfica to glory in the Liga Portugal and Champions League as he brings vast experience to the team. Mourinho will be seen returning to Stamford bridge on September 30 to face his former side Chelsea in the UCL before a battle against Real Madrid later in the season.
