With the veteran India cricketers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli set to return in the upcoming Australia series after almost seven months after last donning the jersey in Champions Trophy 2025 title win,
there have been several talks around their future in international cricket. Although, the two senior players haven’t spoken on the same, but they look to prolong their career until the 2027 ODI World Cup, set to be played across South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
With several cricket experts sharing their respective opinions around Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s future, former India cricketer and head coach Ravi Shastri is the latest to join the bandwagon. Shastri, who has has a close relation with Virat Kohli over the years, believes it will be challenging for them and need to produce some exemplary performances.
It depends on their fitness, their hunger and, of course, form: Ravi Shastri on Ro-Ko’s future
Speaking at the Kayo Sport’s Summer of Cricket launch, Shastri said, "That's why they're here (playing the ODI series against Australia).” "They're part of the mix. It depends on their fitness, their hunger and, of course, form. So, I think this series is very important to see how they go. They themselves will know by the end of this series how they feel and then it's their call," he added.
While the duo have already retired from T20Is and Test cricket, they remain active only in the 50-over format. With the ODI World Cup still two years down the line, Rohit Sharma will be 40 until then whereas Virat Kohli will be 38. Furthermore, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) looking at Shubman Gill as the all-format captain, he was recently named the skipper of ODIs, replacing Rohit Sharma.
