With less than 24 hours remaining until the start of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 in India and Sri Lanka, the England women’s head coach, Charlotte Edwards, has laid down the marker for her team
in the tournament. The 45-year-old, who led England to Women’s Cricket World Cup title as a player in 2009, expects her players to make the semi-final as the bare minimum when the question was put up to her in a recent interview.
Notably, in the last edition of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2022, England reached the final, where they lost to the reigning champions Australia, but after that, their form in the previous two T20 Women’s World Cups wasn’t up to their expectation. In the build-up to the premier 50-overs tournament, England struggled during their home summer, losing to India in the ODI series after a drubbing in Australia at the start of the year.
Although in the two warm-up matches ahead of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, England soundly defeated Australia and India, two of the favourites under the captaincy of Nat Sciver-Brunt, which will bolster their confidence to do well in the tournament. When asked about her bare minimum expectation from England players, Charlotte Edwards said, “We want to be at the semi-final knockout phases, and then we know anything can happen from there.”
England will take on South Africa in their ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 opener on October 3
The first match in the eight-team round robin tournament for England is set to happen against South Africa on Friday, October 3, at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. Finishing in the top four places is paramount in the single round robin group to reach the semi-final stage of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, and for that to happen, England probably will have to get the better of at least one of India or Australia in Indore in the latter phase of the tournament.
In the opening match of the Women’s Cricket World Cup this year, co-hosts India and Sri Lanka will play against each other in Guwahati on Tuesday, September 30.
