After going down in the first two ODIs of the three-match series against Australia, the Indian cricket team registered a consolation win in the third ODI in Sydney to avoid a clean sweep. While the win also
its key moments, star Indian batter and deputy to Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer suffered a nasty blow. Iyer, who has been in decent form, took a stunner to dismiss Alex Carey.
In the process of completing a running catch, Iyer landed awkwardly on the ground and sustained a blow on his rib cage. While after India’s nine-wicket win in Sydney, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) informed that he was taken to the hospital and initial diagnosis revealed “jerk”. But with further reports due, sources close to the development also claimed that he’ll be out of action for at least three weeks.
BCCI shares update on Shreyas Iyer as batter suffers laceration injury to the spleen
Days after the incident, the BCCI have finally opened up confirming that the cricketer is current in the ICU in Sydney and is being monitored closely. “ Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation ,” the statement from BCCI read.
“ Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress ,” it further added.
With clouds now looming over his future, he is unlikely for the upcoming South Africa series at home.
