The Indian women’s cricket team etched history on Sunday, November 2 after their defeated South Africa Women in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 Final at the DY Patil Sports Academy by 52 runs to win
their first-ever ODI World Cup. After being put to bat first by Laura Wolvaardt-led Protean side, the Indian women’s team posted 298 at the loss of seven wickets in their 50 overs, courtesy a 78-ball 87 from Shafali Verma and key knocks from Deepti Sharma (58) and Smriti Mandhana (45).
In reply, the South African women’s team looked good with skipper Laura Wolvaardt playing a 98-ball 101, but Deepti Sharma stole the limelight, picking five wickets in her 9.3 overs to restrict the visitors to 246/10 in 45.3 overs and help India registering a commanding 52-run win. While the victory was all the more special as Harmanpreet Kaur finally lifted the World Cup title after years in what could be probably her last ODI World Cup.
BCCI announces historic INR 51 Cr prize money for India Women’s CWC 2025 win
Seeing India lift their first-ever ODI World Cup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced historic prize money for the title winners. A gesture which has been widely seen among the men’s team after their T20 World Cup 2024 triumph and the ICC Champions Trophy, the BCCI announced INR 51 Core reward for the Women in Blue. The prize, which includes players, coaches, and support staff, marks one of the most significant rewards in Indian sporting history.
Speaking to ANI after India Women’s title win, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the prize money while recalling the recent upliftments in the women’s cricket circle. In his statement, he said, “In 1983, Kapil Dev brought about a new era and encouragement in cricket by making India win the World Cup. The same excitement and encouragement has been introduced by the women today. Harmanpreet Kaur and her team have not just won the trophy today; they have won the hearts of all Indians.”
Additionally, while hailing Jay Shah’s continuous effort to promote women’s cricket, he added, “BCCI has also announced a reward prize of INR 51 Crore for the entire team - players, coaches, and support staff.” This comes in addition to the prize money of USD 4.48 million (INR 39.78 Cr) from the ICC, which was announced prior to the commencement of the tournament.
