On October 5, 1999, Team India all-rounderWashington Sundar was born to Mani Sundar and his mother in Chennai. His father was also a cricketer so his introduction to the sport happened at an early age. At the age of five, he started playing cricket. In the 2016/17, he broke into domestic cricket with his Ranji Trophy debut for Tamil Nadu against Maharashtra. Almost after five months, he also made his List A debut for Tamil Nadu in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His T20 debut came in the Indian Premier League 2017, when he played alongside MS Dhoni in Rising Pune Supergiant in the season.
Sundar made his international debut for India in December 2017, with his ODI appearance against Sri Lanka. The same month, he also played his maiden T20I contest against Sri Lanka. In January
2021, when he made his Test debut for Indiaagainst Australia in Brisbane, he showcased his all-round talent. In the first innings, he bagged three wickets with the ball while as a batter, when India were on 186/6 while following a total of 369, Sundar stepped up and built a 123-run stand for the seventh wicket. Sundar chipped in with a 62-run knock to help India reply with 336 runs. India won that match by three wickets and also sealed the series by a 2-1 margin.
Washington Sundar’s IPL career
In IPL, Washington Sundar has served four teams so far. After playing his debut season for Pune he delivered his service to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) from 2018 to 2021. From 2022 to 2024, he also played for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Currently, he is a part of the 2022 champions Gujarat Titans (GT).
GT splurged INR 3.2 Crore in the IPL 2025 auction to reserve his services. Discussing the 25-year-old’s numbers in the cash-rich league, he has racked up 511 runs and 39 wickets in 66 matches. In July 2022, Sundar also made his county debut with Lancashire against Northamptonshire. In 2025, he signed up for Hampshire.
