On Friday, October 24, Sheffield Wednesday filed for administration after being charged with multiple breaches of regulations by the EFL in recent times following their inability to pay the player’s wages
on time. It is widely reported that the club filed the notice to enter administration at 10:01 AM earlier today at a specialist court called the Insolvency and Companies Court with the High Court in the United Kingdom (UK).
Following that, the EFL confirmed that Sheffield Wednesday were deducted 12 points in the Championship, the second division of English football, which means that they are now in 24th and last place in the standings with (-6) points to their name. The club was already at the bottom with just one win and three draws in their 11 completed matches in the Championship before sinking further in the wake of going under administration.
Sheffield Wednesday will take on Oxford United in their next Championship match tomorrow
Sheffield Wednesday will be hosting Oxford United at Hillsborough on Saturday, October 25, in their next game in the Championship, and it’s expected to be a sombre atmosphere at the venue to say the least. As per the report in BBC Sport, the joint-administrators appointed for the club are Julian Pitts, Kris Wigfield, and Paul Stanley of Begbies Traynor, who met with the players, while the staff were also briefed about the situation by the officials.
Also, Sky Sports has stated that the financial issues at Sheffield Wednesday under current owner Dejphon Chansiri led to the club owing around £1m to HMRC (His Majesty's Revenue & Customs) in unpaid tax. This was the ultimate reason as to why Sheffield Wednesday officials had to apply for administration in the special court earlier today, and with that, the future of the club hangs in the balance as we speak.
The official statement from EFL on the matter stated that they “will now engage in discussions with the administrators in respect of the immediate actions required to enable them to achieve an early resolution, and end the ongoing uncertainty faced by Sheffield Wednesday staff, management, players, supporters and all those associated with the club and their local community.”
