Super Over Rules in Cricket: History and Latest Updates

The Super Over rule in cricket is one of the most thrilling tie-break methods used to decide matches that end with both teams scoring the same number of runs. Commonly seen in T20 Internationals, franchise leagues, and knockout ODI matches, the Super Over ensures that games produce a clear winner instead of ending in a tie. 

What Is a Super Over?

A Super Over is a one-over eliminator played immediately after a tied match. Each team gets one additional over of six balls to bat and score as many runs as possible. The team with the higher score at the end of the over wins the match.

Super Over Batting Rules

Each side nominates three batters and one bowler. Only two batters can be dismissed during the over. If the batting team loses two wickets before completing six balls, their innings ends immediately.

The batting order is chosen by the team, and they must select from players who were part of the playing XI in the main match.

Bowling and Fielding Regulations

The bowling team selects any one bowler from their XI, provided that player was eligible to bowl in the original match. Standard fielding restrictions apply, similar to the final over of a T20 innings — usually only five fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle.

What Happens If the Super Over Is Tied?

If the Super Over also ends in a tie, another Super Over is played. This process continues until a winner is determined. In earlier years, boundary count rules were sometimes used, but modern ICC playing conditions now mandate repeated Super Overs instead of statistical tie-breakers.

Player Eligibility Rules

Only players who were on the field at the end of the match — including substitutes fielding for injured players — are eligible to participate in the Super Over. Retired hurt batters can return if medically cleared.

What is double Super Over? 

The Super Over is often described as cricket’s version of a penalty shootout. Teams typically send their most explosive hitters and death-over specialists to maximise scoring and restrict runs. Decisions such as choosing whether to bat or bowl first can play a crucial tactical role, depending on pitch conditions and dew.

If a Super Over happens, and the match gets ties, then another super over happens. As per the rules of ICC, the Super Overs will keep on happening till the result comes.
