The Brazilian rising star Joao Fonseca, who celebrated his biggest win last by defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at ATP 500 title, has turned down the comparison with the world-class Novak Djokovic.
The Brazilian became one of the youngest ATP 500 champions after defeating the Spaniard in straight sets. He therefore validated his quick ascent to the top of tennis's potential. Davidovich Fokina praised the young player after the title match, speculating that Fonseca would soon take on the most formidable players of the new generation, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
Joao and Novak Djokovic, who earlier successfully disrupted the Rafael Nadal-Roger Federer era with their unwavering consistency and constant progress, were compared by Alejandro. The Brazilian was grateful for the gift, but he remained grounded. According to him, each player's tale develops uniquely. Even nice comparisons are insignificant in comparison to consistent growth and everyday work. Joao is committed to his growth and keeps pushing himself while acknowledging the amazing level that Sinner and Alcaraz have already attained, setting a high standard for their competitors.
Joao Fonseca feels everyone has their own history, and he is gonna have his own
Post final clash in Basel, Davidovich Fokina of Spain celebrated his peer's win, and he has predicted that he will eventually compete with players like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. “You are the person of this sport. You have a bright future for sure. You’re gonna be the next Nole (Novak Djokovic) to beat Carlos and Jannik for sure,” he said.
However, the 19-year-old Brazilian was quick to turn down comparison. "I am not a fan of these comparisons. Everyone has their own history and I’m gonna have my own history. “I think it’s a pleasure hearing those kind words from him. Great guy, great friend, great fighter.
“I’m trying my best every day just to be with them, but we all know that Jannik and Carlos are playing next-level tennis. All the other players from the Tour, we are working harder and harder to keep going with them.”
Fonseca along with Learner Tien are the only two players currently ranking in the top 100 players aged 19. Fonseca may compete next year's Australian Open as the seeded player.
