Legend Ricky Ponting wants the Australiateam management to promote star batter Travis Head in the batting line-up against England in the upcoming Ashes 2025/26 to be played Down Under. England will play five
Tests against their arch-rivals Australia in their backyard from November 21, 2025 to January 8, 2026. Australia have been holding the illustrious urn since 2018 and they will look to retain the title again in the upcoming competition. In the 21st century, Australia, while hosting the Ashes, have lost only one series and theis fact will upset England.
With the competition less than two months away, ex-Aussie captain Ricky Ponting believes that moving Head at number three can make room for batters such as Beau Webster and Cameron Green in the playing XI. Ponting also feels that Head at the top-order can be leathal for England's star speedsters Jofra Archer and Mark Wood.
"As a young bloke you used to come into the side as a No.5 or No.6 player and eventually you worked your way up and find yourself in a No.3 spot. So they could think about doing that with Travis Head, they could move him up to No.3. The way England play their cricket, to have someone like Travis Head coming in at No.3 and be able to put some pressure back on the likes of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood and these guys, that’s another way they could look at it if they really want to get on the front foot and try and dominate England through this Ashes summer," remarked Ponting while speaking to SEN Radio on Monday.
Travis Head played an effective role in Australia's 2021/22 Ashes triumph
In the Ashes 2021/22, when Australia as hosts vanquished England by a 4-0 margin, Travis Head played an instrumental role. He notched up 357 runs in six innings of four matches and made a major contribution in Australia's win. The southpaw also became the Player of the Series for his exceptional batting display.
Head's Test batting numbers are extraordinary against England. Appearing in 13 matches, he has accumulated 910 runs with two hundreds and five fifties in 24 innings. Noting these figures, Australia will keep their expectations high from 31-year-old for the massive assignment coming ahead.
