Shreyas Iyer has been out of action since last October when he injured himself in the third ODI match against Australia. He spent his time in rehab and had to miss the ODI series against South Africa. There were plenty of questions on his return and whether he will be fit enough to comeback. A few days back he was named in the India squad for the New Zealand tour. But there was a clear mention that Shreyas had to prove his fitness in Vijay Hazare Trophy game to get approval for the ODI series.
Named as captain for the Mumbai team in Vijay Hazare Trophy, Shreyas Iyer had to wait a while as it was raining. The match was reduced to 33 over per side against Himachal Pradesh. Yashasvi Jaiswal departed cheaply and Mumbai found themselves in trouble
at 55/2. In walked, captain Shreyas Iyer who showed no signs of discomfort on his return and looked in top form.
Shreyas Iyer started aggressively and scored a well crafted half century. He was dismissed for 82 of just 53 balls. It was an innings which included 10 fours and three sixes. It was not just a knock it was a statement made by Shreyas. He seamlessly scored at a strike rate of more than 150 on his return. This was his first ever competitive game since the injury in Australia and he did not disappoint.
Although things were not smooth enough for Jaiswal. He was dismissed cheaply again. In the 3 matches he has played in the VHT, Jaiswal scored a sluggish 46 in the first game in his return. He was dismissed for 3 in the previous match and in today’s game he could only make 15. So it is a sign of concern.
Shreyas Iyer is expected to play another game for Mumbai before linking up with the Indian squad for the New Zealand One Day Series which starts on January 11. Currently Shreyas Iyer is part of only ODI squad having not been picked for WT20. He will look to do well and get more match practice in the domestic circuit once after the New Zealand series finishes.
