Scottish footballer and midfielder, John McGinn, 31, who captains Aston Villa, has signed a new deal with the club that will make him stay until 2028. After signing a four-year contract in June 2023, the midfielder's
existing terms were extended by one year, in a recent development. The Athletic, in its August story, mentioned that due to interest from rival Premier League clubs, Villa was reportedly intending to negotiate fresh terms with McGinn. Over the summer, Everton and, more recently, Newcastle United expressed interest in the Scotland international, who is seen as a crucial component of manager Unai Emery's agenda.
This new deal by John McGinn comes at a critical juncture in the club's progress. He has made a name for himself in the Aston Villa dressing room and became an engine room over time since joining in 2018. The stalwart successfully guided Villa's ascent through the ranks as captain and is currently a key figure in their aspirations for both home and continental success.
John McGinn's impressive start pushed Aston Villa in top half of the Premier League
Aston Villa labelled this new agreement extension as "delightful" moment, as it defines his importance to the club. Since Villa has been at the top half of the Premier League in recent years, John McGinn has been a reliable member of Emery's squad. He has also had a strong start to the season, scoring in their first two Europa League games, victories over Bologna and Feyenoord. McGinn was the captain for Villa in July 2022, before the arrival of Emery, and both have maintained a close friendship since then.
McGinn participated in all but two of Villa's UEFA Champions League games up to their quarter-final elimination last season, making 49 appearances while missing just four due to injury. Meanwhile, Villa qualified for the UEFA Europa League with a sixth-place result. Now by extending the deal with McGinn, Aston Villa is sending clear message about their intention to keep their strong player with the club, and keep the stability alive under this leadership.
