Team Indiamiddle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has revealed how disciplined and domestic cricket helped him to win a spot in India's Champions Trophy 2025 squad. Iyer wasn't a regular member of India's ODI
squad until he delivered sensational batting performances to the team in the Champions Trophy 2025. He was not included in the 2023/24 BCCI central contracts but in April 2025, when the board declared the annual player retainership, Iyer succeeded in making it to it. Iyer shone with his bat in India's Champions Trophy 2025 win, chipping in with 243 runs in five outings at an average of 48.60.
Recently, Shreyas Iyer appeared on CEAT Awards 2025 and told the participants how his diligence in domestic cricket helped him back to be in Team India's fold. "I told myself to set a routine, discipline myself and play domestic cricket. I went back to my time in Mumbai, played the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. I performed in all these tournaments, and they helped me boost my momentum and confidence heading into CT. Then I was lucky to have played in ODIs against England and stamp my authority there," said Iyer.
Shreyas Iyer enjoys playing cricket in pressure situations
Shreyas Iyer also said that he enjoys playing in pressure situations. The 30-year-old said that he put himself in crunch situations during the Champions Trophy 2025. "During the CT, I was in a position where I had to play ball to ball in the start and then put myself in pressure and charge against bowlers. We thought in Dubai, 250-300 was a winnable total. My job was to take the team to that total, and then after that, let us see what happens. Looking at the line-up, our bowlers, we had immense confidence that we would be able to defend. We were also confident of chasing," added Shreyas.
Shreyas will next be seen against Australia in the upcoming three ODIs to be played between October 19 and 25. Iyer has been appointed Team India's vice-captain and he will be expected to carry his form from Champions Trophy ahead.
