Daria Kasatkina, the 28-year-old professional tennis player, is currently ranked world No.19 by the WTA with her best ranking of eight coming in October 2022. She has been struggling to perform consistently
this season, having failed to secure a title to her name with a 19-21 record. With that, Kasatkina has described this season as too much for her mentally and emotionally.
The Australia also said that she is at a "breaking point" because of which she decided to end her season early and not participate in the rest of the matches in 2025. She has revealed that her nationality change from Russian to Australian in March this year has deeply affected her and has taken a mental toll on her due to her birth country’s strict LGBTQ+ laws and war against Ukraine.
It's time I listened to myself for a change: Daria Kasatkina
Daria Kasatkina stated that the burden of making the nationality change has kept her from meeting her father for four years now, which has been bothering her for a long time. She said, "I've been far from fine for a long time and, truth be told, my results and performances show that. Add into the mix the emotional and mental stress related to my nationality switch and there is only so much I can deal with and take as an individual woman. If this makes me weak, then so be it, I'm weak."
However, reflecting upon her decision to end the season early, she remarked, "I know I am strong and will get stronger by being away and recharging. It's time I listened to myself for a change." The long season schedule has been a mental burden for most of the professional players, the former world no.1 Novak Djokovic has recently stated that it is high time now that the players "unite" together and stand tall against the stressful season calendar which affects the player’s performances.
