Jose Mourinho
, the 62-year-old Portuguese manager, has been a part various elite football clubs throughout his career which includes Chelsea, Manchester United, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Tottenham Hotspur, among others. He joined the Turkish club Fenerbahce in the year 2024. However, Mourinho parted ways with the club after just over one season with the club as things did not work out as intended. The Portuguese coach has decided to make a return to his home town and has already signed in as the new manager for the Portuguese club Benfica. This comes after Benfica decided to sack their manager Bruno Lage with immediate effect recently. After signing in for Benfica, during an interview Mourinho was asked about his journey with Fenerbahce,
the Portuguese international took a dig at the club stating that it was a "mistake" for him to join the Turkish side.
I gave everything until the last day: Jose Mourinho
While explaining his feelings, Jose Mourinho stated, "My career so far has been rich; I've coached the biggest clubs in the world, in different countries. I made the wrong choice; sometimes I don't have the right word in Portuguese... no regrets, because regrets don't help us at all in life, but the awareness of what we did well and what we did wrong exists. I made a mistake going to Fenerbahçe; it wasn't my cultural level, it wasn't my football level, it wasn't my level. Obviously, I gave everything until the last day."
Mourinho further revealed that he had to mourn leaving the club - just as former Benfica manager Bruno Lage might be now - as it is not easy for any manager to depart. The Portuguese also stated that he is very excited with the Benfica project and believes that it is a club which is of his level of his coaching - one of the world’s best. He will be taking on his former team Chelsea on his return to the biggest stage of football, the UEFA Champions League.
