India batter and World Cup winner Harleen Deol was retired hurt during a Women’s Premier League 2026 match between UP Warriorz and Delhi Capitals. This incident took place on Wednesday, 14th January. She became only the second player in WPL’s history to be ‘retired out’ after Gujarat Giants’ Ayushi Soni was brought off against Mumbai Indians on Tuesday. However in the case of Ayushi Soni she was going very slow and the batter who replaced her scored 35 runs and that tactical retirement worked for Gujarat Giants.
However the tactical ‘retire out’ done today went as wrong as possible for UP Warriorz. Harleen Deol was on 47 off 36 balls when head coach Abhishek Nayar asked her to come off ahead of the 18th over. Her replacement, Chloe Tryon was soon
dismissed by N. Shree Charani as the South Africa all-rounder could score just the one run off three balls. Later UP Warriorz lost their way as they could score only 13 runs and lost four wickets in the final overs. This decision to retire out Harleen who was a set batter proved to be a costly one and backfired badly.
UP Warriorz captain Meg Lanning in the post match defended the decision as she said that Harleen was batting well but it got tougher in the end and they wanted to send in a better hitter. Lanning told that it was purely decision based on conditions and even if it failed she accepted the outcome.
UP Warriorz suffered another defeat in WPL 2025 and have three losses in three matches now. Coach Abhishek Nayar was under the scanner for the decisions he made and at the moment the UP side have not been able to get the desired results.
