Former Team India opener Virender Sehwaghas reacted to legend Viv Richard’s compliment. Richards, who is in India currently, had a chat with News24, in which he said watching Sehwag batting reminded him of his own playing days. He also drew similarities among Sehwag, Australia legend Adam Gilchrist, and ex-Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi. Richards also credited Sehwag for reviving Test cricket with his fierce batting style.
“When I watched Sehwag bat, I saw a reflection of myself. I found him even more dangerous than Shahid Afridi and Adam Gilchrist. Test cricket was fading, but Sehwag revived the format,” said Richards. Reacting to Richards’ praise on X, Sehwag penned, “Humbled, Sir @ivivianrichards. You made bowlers fear batsmen — I just
kept the tradition alive for the next generation. Test cricket will never die as long as there’s joy in attacking it!”
Virender Sehwag’s Test records
Virender Sehwag served Team India from 1999 to 2013 and during these 14 years, he played 104 Tests, in which he accumulated 8586 runs with 23 hundreds and 32 fifties. With these numbers he is the sixth-highest run-scorer for India in the format. He is the only Team India player who has scored triple hundred twice in the longest form of the sport. In 2008, when South Africa toured India for three Tests, Sehwag produced his best knock of 319 after facing only 304 balls. That was his second triple hundred in Tests.
Earlier, in 2004, he smashed 309 against Pakistan in the Multan Test. Riding on his ferocious innings, India trampled the hosts by an innings and 52 runs. The right-handed opener also became the Player of the Match (POTM) for his scintillating batting show.
