On Saturday, November 8, the Australia men’s cricket team were handed a 1-2 series defeat in the five-match T20I series against India at home. Hosting the T20 World Champions in a white-ball series, the team from
Down Under won the ODI leg by 2-1 margin, but the Men in Blu avenged the ODI series defeat, claiming the T20I series after the fifth T20I in Brisbane was abandoned due to rain.
With the series win, India not only continued their winning streak in T20Is, they also looked to put their combinations right with the T20 World Cup set to be held next year in February-March in India and Sri Lanka. However, in the post-match presentation, the Aussie skipper Mitchell Marsh was asked if he will continue to lead the side or not.
I think I'll be there: Mitchell Marsh clears on air around T20I captaincy ahead of T20 WC 2026
Speaking at the post-match presentation after series defeat, former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist asked Marsh about T20 World Cup captaincy. Marsh quickly confirmed that he would continue as captain in the shortest format, while Cummins will lead in Test and ODIs. "Our squad, at full strength, is a pretty settled team. The Big Bash is there for the guys to enjoy and hopefully the Scorchers win. Good question (who will captain in the T20 World Cup - him or Pat). I think I'll be there," he said.
"There's a lot of learnings and positives to take forward. The adaptability and flexibility in our group and the squad we're trying to build in a World Cup year has been amazing. Guys have come in, done really well, played their roles, that's all we can ask for," he further added. It is to be noted that Pat Cummins is currently rehabilitating from a lumbar stress injury and is set to miss the first Ashes Test in Perth.
