Team India captain Shubman Gill has discussed ODI futures of veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. On October 4, BCCI announced Team India for the three-match ODI series in Australia and Rohit was stripped
of captaincy in the ODI format. Following this move, questions arose among India supporters whether both star players are in the selectors' scheme of things for the World Cup 2027 to be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. This year, Rohit guided India to the Champions Trophy 2025 title win and received appreciation for his leadership.
A day ahead of the second Test between Indiaand West Indies, Gill attended a pre-match presser in which he was asked questions regarding the ODI futures of the two legends. Replying to the query, Gill said, “The experience they have and the number of matches they have won for India, there are very few players who have (done) that. There are very few players in the world with such skill, quality and experience. From that perspective, we are definitely looking at them for 2027.”
Shubman Gill expected to break into record books
Holding reins of India’s ODI side for the first time, Shubman Gill will look to be at his best and guide India to a series win against Australia. If he succeeds in doing that, he will join MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, who are the only India skippers who have won ODI series on Aussie soil.
Gill exuded confidence as Test captain in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The 26-year-old led the team from the front and helped India level the five-match series by 2-2. Notching up 754 runs in 10 innings of five matches, he ended up as the leading run-scorer in the competition. His batting brilliance also made him the Player of the Tournament, alongside England’s Harry Brook.
