In the second ODI of the three-match series against Australia, the Indian cricket team suffered a tough loss by two wickets at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide on Thursday. With that, the Men in Blue also conceded an unassailable lead of 2-0 to Australia in the series while the third and final ODI is going to be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in Sydney on Saturday, October 25.
Former India captain Rohit Sharma was the top scorer with an impressive 73 off 97 in tough conditions, including a seven fours and two sixes while his compatriot Virat Kohli fell for back-to-back ducks for the first-time in his ODI career. After the conclusion of the match, a video has gone viral on social media platform Instagram in which the former India captain could
be seen walking with head coach Gautam Gambhir and current skipper Shubman Gill.
Watch the video here:
The clip had Gautam Gambhir seemingly heard saying to the Hitman, “Rohit, sabko lag rha tha ki aaj farewell match tha, ek photo to laga do (Rohit, everyone thought that today was your farewell match, at least post a photo).” The comment from the Indian head coach has sent the world of internet ablaze with many speculating as to when Rohit Sharma will retire from international cricket, especially since he has already quit from Tests and T20Is, two of the three major cricket formats.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli could be playing their last international match in Australia on Saturday
While SportsTiger can’t confirm if the aforementioned video is indeed real, one thing is for certain that the 38-year-old is on his last legs as far as his international career is concerned, whether the retirement comes now or later. With the ODI format not expected to be the center of attention until 2027, the year of the ICC Cricket World Cup in South Africa, there will be limited opportunities for him to play for India at the top level.
The same could be said about Virat Kohli, who has failed to open his account in the first two matches of the ODI series against a formidable Australian pace bowling attack.
