Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson announced retirement from T20Is on November 2. The Kiwi stalwart’s career kicked off in 2011 and during these 14 years, he achieved some superb success for his
national side. It was his captaincy which took New Zealand to the T20 World Cup finals for the first time in 2024. He led New Zealand from the front and ended up as his team’s most successful batter in the tournament. He notched up 216 runs in seven matches at an average of 43.20.
Williamson’s retirement has come at a time when the T20 World Cup 2026 is three months away. Although the veteran wasn’t active for his team’s T20I side since June 2024. His last T20I appearance for New Zealand came against Papua New Guinea in the T20 World Cup 2024. Under his captaincy, the Black Caps couldn’t reach Super Eight and concluded their campaign in the group stage.

Kane Williamson started his T20I career in October 2011 against Zimbabwe in Harare. Williamson captained New Zealand from 2016 to 2025 and during this period, New Zealand captained his national team in the four editions of the T20 World Cup (2016, 2021, 2022, and 2024). Off the four installments of the distinguished T20 tournament, the Black Caps reached the knockouts thrice.

Discussing his overall numbers in T20Is, the right-handed batter played 93 matches, in which he racked up 2575 runs with 18 fifties in 90 innings at an average of 33.44 strike rate of 123.08. His best innings came against India in Hamilton in January 2020, when he smashed 95 off just 48. The match ended in the tie but India stood in Super Over and emerged victorious.
