Shreyas Iyer, the vice-captain of the Indian ODI team, suffered a gruesome injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third and final match of the recently concluded series against
Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). While India managed to win the match convincingly, they lost the series 2-1 and the situation in regards to the 30-year-old took a turn for the worse as he reportedly got admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in a hospital in Sydney.
In a latest report published in NDTV on the matter, the parents of Shreyas Iyer have applied for urgent visa to Australia to meet their injured son in Sydney. As per the BCCI press release from earlier today, he has suffered a laceration injury to his spleen after undergoing an evaluation at the hospital apart from being “under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well” under careful watch of the governing body’s medical team, who are consulted by specialists.
The injury to Shreyas Iyer happened when he ran backwards from backward point region to complete the catch on the bowling of Harshit Rana to get the better of Alex Carey in the third ODI in Sydney. Upon grabbing hold of the ball, he landed awkwardly on his left side before clutching at it and seemed in extreme agony before the Indian physio and support staff came to the field to help take him off with visible concern on the faces of his teammates.
Shreyas Iyer scored 72 runs in two innings before missing out on batting in Sydney ODI
With the injury being of a serious nature, the participation of Shreyas Iyer is in doubt in the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa at home, starting on November 30. During the three 50-over matches down under against Australia recently, he scored 72 runs in two innings at an average of 36 with the highest score of 61 coming in tough batting conditions in Adelaide in the second ODI, not needed to bat in Sydney.
Shreyas Iyer was an integral part of India’s recent ICC Champions Trophy 2025 victory earlier in the year in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and his well wishers are hoping for his swift recovery from injury.
