Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has added another achievement to her profile as she pulled off a silver medal in the 48kg category at the World Weightlifting Championships 2025, held in Forde, Norway. Chanu is known for her silver medal triumph in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She played her maiden competition after bagging the gold medal at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in August. In the seven-member India women’s squad for the ongoing marquee event, she is a notable name for her rich past as a competitor in grand tournaments such as Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games.
The 31-year-old justified her reputation in this competition as she added another feather to her cap with her latest success. Chanu’s record in the World Weightlifting
Championships has been bright. In 2017, she won gold in the 48kg category at the tournament held in Anaheim while after five years, she registered a silver medal victory in the 49kg category in Bogota.
Chanu couldn’t beat North Korea’s Ri Song-gum, who eventually won the gold medal after lifting a total of 213kg weight. Ri also registered a unique milestone of 91kg snatch, a 122kg clean and jerk, and a total lift of 213. Thailand's Thanyathon Sukcharoen, who made it to the podium with the bronze medal, registered a total lift of 198 kgs.
Lovepreet Singh to lead India men's squad at World Weightlifting Championships
In the men’s category, eyes will be set onLovepreet Singh, who will be spearheading the Indian squad at the World Weightlifting Championships. Lovepreet recently hit the headlines for winning bronze at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships.
Ajith Narayana and Ajaya Babu Valluri, who achieved gold in two different categories during the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, are also a part of India’s squad. Narayana and Valluri will compete in 71 and 79 kgs respectively.
