About to represent the North Zone team for the Duleep Trophy 2025, a marquee event as far as the annals of India’s domestic cricket is concerned, will be Shubman Gill, who has just recently been selected
as the captain of the side. As soon as news came about Gill’s likely ascension to the captaincy of the Duleep Trophy’s North Zone side, there was excitement about the dominant right hander leading the team having just recently demonstrated red hot form with the bat.
But while Gill has been named the likely captain of the squad, the batter hailing from the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), his deputy in the North Zone side will be Ankit Kumar. At a time where there’s been some criticism in the past two years or so about prominent faces of Indian cricket seldom making time for domestic duties, Shubman Gill’s selection in the Duleep Trophy is a welcome reprieve of sorts. It tells the fan that even as national cricketing duties take centre stage in the life of a cricketer, there’s always time and effort that can be made for domestic cricket.
Shubman Gill scored 754 runs in Test series in England as captain
Gill’s mere presence shall lift the confidence of the other members of his North Zone stable, some of whose noted names include cricketers like Ayush Badoni, Arshdeep Singh, and Yash Dhull. What is most important in all this, however, is just how sensational has been Shubman Gill’s batting form, the dogged right-hander, also captain of the Test side, having made 754 runs in the recent Tests played in England, in which he struck a career best individual score of 269, to help the team level the five-match series 2-2.
As far as his next international assignment is concerned, Gill's immediate challenge will be the Asia Cup 2025 challenge, whose format will be T20 overs a side. Gill will hope to continue his purple patch as seen so avidly in England.
