Virat Kohli's hyper-aggressive on-field persona has triggered some of the most dramatic showdowns in Indian Premier League (IPL) history. Operating with a heart-on-the-sleeve competitive spirit, Kohli has frequently
clashed with opposing players, mentors, and match officials across his tournament career.
The most prominent and public on-field confrontations involving Kohli throughout his IPL journey include the following notable incidents:
RCB vs KKR (2013):
After Kohli was dismissed by Laxmipathy Balaji, KKR captain Gautam Gambhir walked aggressively towards the cover region while making a remark. Instead of returning to the pavilion, Kohli charged back towards Gambhir. The two stood chest-to-chest, exchanging severe verbal volleys, before KKR player Rajat Bhatia stepped in physically to separate them. Both players were officially reprimanded by the BCCI.
MI vs RCB (2020):
In an intense 2020 group match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and RCB, Kohli attempted a psychological tactic to break Suryakumar Yadav’s rhythm. While fielding at short cover, Kohli walked directly up to Yadav at the crease, shining the ball while fixed in a menacing, unblinking stare. Yadav famously refused to back away or break eye contact, maintaining complete composure. After the match, Yadav diffused any tension, calling it standard high-stakes on-field intensity.
RCB vs LSG (2023):
Exactly after 10 years of the clash in Eden Garden, Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir (then LSG head coach) locked horns during a critical match. Kohli celebrated aggressively throughout the game, reacting to Gambhir's previous "shush" gesture toward the Bengaluru crowd. Handshakes post-game turned toxic; Gambhir pulled LSG opener Kyle Mayers away from a conversation with Kohli and charged directly at Kohli. Multiple players and staff had to hold a heavily animated Gambhir back. Both figures were docked 100% of their match fees. The physical flashpoint that triggered the 2023 Gambhir showdown actually began as an escalating battle between Kohli and LSG fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq. During the post-match handshakes, Naveen aggressively brushed off Kohli's hand, resulting in a hostile verbal exchange that spilled over onto social media. (Naveen posted cryptic photos of mangoes whenever RCB lost.) The bad blood finally ended later that year during the 2023 ICC World Cup when Kohli and Naveen hugged it out on the pitch.
RCB vs SRH (2026):
Virat Kohli’s latest on-field spat came during RCB’s final league match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Uppal on May 23, 2026. Chasing 255, Kohli got involved in a heated exchange with Travis Head, who was fielding near the boundary and constantly chirping at him to play attacking shots. Kohli responded with a sarcastic “Impact Player” gesture, mockingly telling Head to bowl himself instead of talking from the ropes.
Kohli was dismissed for 15 off 11 balls, after which Head reportedly taunted him by saying, “Mate, you got out before I even came on to bowl.” Following SRH’s 55-run win, tensions carried into the handshake line as Kohli ignored Head’s outstretched hand and walked past him, leaving the Australian stunned. The moment quickly went viral on social media.
