World No. 1 tennis star Jannik Sinner has officially ended his season as he continues his recovery from a right knee injury. Sinner has been out of action since July this year after his second Wimbledon
title earlier this year. However, the 25-year-old has now decided against making a comeback, and has announced pulling out of the rest of the 2026 season.
He subsequently missed the US Open and withdrew from the China Open and Shanghai Masters. Sinner revealed on Tuesday that he will undergo further treatment for his knee after consulting with his doctors. “Me, together with the doctors, have decided that I need a course of treatment for my knee which means the 2026 season is officially over,” Sinner admitted.
“The last couple of years, especially the ending in Turin, gave me so many beautiful feelings and emotions which this year is going to be way different.”
“But at the moment, I also need to think about my long-term career. So I’ll do everything possible to get back 100%,” he added.

Jannik Sinner’s Withdrawal Opens World No. 1 Battle
Jannik Sinner’s extended absence from the court has also opened the fight for the World No. 1 spot. Players such as Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz are expected to challenge for it considering Sinner would not be able to add ranking points towards the closing end of the season. It also means that Sinner wouldn’t be able to defend his ATP Finals title in Turin or be a part of the Davis Cup in Bologna.
Notably, Sinner suffered the injury following a successful stretch between Indian Wells and Wimbledon. His withdraws and court absences had already raised questions about whether he could return in time for the final leg of the season or not. However, Sinner and his team have now decided to focus on recovery for a long-term focus.
