During the third Test of the Ashes series in Manchester on August 11, 2005, Australia’s star leg spinner Shane Warne achieved a big milestone as he became the first bowler to complete 600 wickets in Test cricket.
Regarded as the greatest leg spinner in the world, Warne finished as second highest wicket-taker of all-time in international cricket with 1001 wickets from 339 wickets across formats.
Shane Warne is also the first-ever player to reach the milestone of 600 Test wickets and ended his Test career with 708 scalps in 145 matches. He took his 600th wicket in Test in a match against England at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester during his 126th Test match of his career.
3rd Test match of Ashes 2005 ended in a draw
Talking about the match, batting first, England were bowled out for 444 runs in the first innings with captain Michael Vaughan top scoring with 166(215) runs. For Australia, Shane Warne and Brett Lee took four wickets each while Jason Gillespie and Simon Katich scalped a wicket each. In reply, Australia were bowled out for 302 runs as England took a lead of 142 runs in the first innings. However, after taking four wickets with the ball, Warne also shone with the bat as he top-scored with 90(122) runs.
In the second innings, England posted 280/6 giving Australia a target of 423 runs to win. Andrew Strauss scored 106 runs with the bat. In reply, Australian captain Ricky Ponting shone with a knock of 156 runs off 275 balls as Australia scored 371/9 before the match ended in a draw. Although there was no winner, it turned out to be a memorable game for Shane Warne who became the first-ever player to take 600 Test wickets.
