The Chennai Super Kings have reportedly denied rumours of Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s interest in buying franchise stakes. Recently, a media report suggested that Dhoni, who has been associated with the franchise since
the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League, demanded 25% stakes, but the owners were willing to offer him only 3%. The reports further suggested that the final offer from the team came upto 5.5%, while Dhoni was willing to settle for 18% of shares. Not only this, but per the rumours, as the deal fell through, it took a hit on Dhoni’s relationship with the management of the five-time IPL winning team.
Though neither the management nor the cricketer commented on the same, former cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra squashed the reports on the basis of basic calculations. However, as per the latest reports from Cricbuzz, the management itself has broken its silence on the same and denied the rumours of Dhoni’s demands. Even if we keep the share talks at bay, Dhoni continues to play an influential role in the team despite having bid adieu to capatincy a few years ago.

MS Dhoni Owns Over 1,00,000 Shares in Chennai Super Kings – Reports
Cricbuzz went on to report that MS Dhoni owns over ‘one lakh shares’ in the franchise, which be bought privately sometime in the past. While the number sounds large, his ownership in the team is quite tiny. As per the shareholding pattern, his ownership works out to roughly 0.01%-0.02% of the company. On the contrary, Srinivasan and family owns a stake of more than 55%, while public sharehlders have over 30 crore shares, which account for over 40% of the total.
As per News18, Dhoni’s stakes could be worth around INR 2.6 to 3 crore, based on the current valuation of the franchises following the sales of Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals. Speaking on the playing front, the former skipper didn’t play even in a single game in the recent season of the tournament. However, he is active in the hunt of a new head coach for the team following Stephen Fleming’s departure at the helm of the coaching staff after 17 years.
