Chennai Super Kings have entered a new chapter ahead of IPL 2027 after appointing former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their new head coach. The decision has generated plenty of discussion, particularly
given Zaheer’s legendary career as a player and his previous experience in coaching and mentoring roles.
Ravichandran Ashwin, who has represented CSK in the IPL, has backed the franchise’s decision to bring Zaheer on board. During a discussion about the appointment, Ashwin highlighted Zaheer’s deep understanding of cricket and his stature within Indian cricket.
Ashwin admitted that it might have been difficult for many to predict that a fast bowler like Zaheer Khan would eventually take charge as the head coach of Chennai Super Kings. However, he believes the franchise have found someone who understands the game exceptionally well and has the experience required to work with a team at the highest level.

Ashish Nehra was also considered for CSK role
Ashwin also revealed that Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra was among the names considered during CSK’s search for a new head coach.
Nehra has been an important part of Gujarat Titans’ journey since the franchise entered the IPL and has developed a strong working relationship with the team.
According to Ashwin, Nehra is happy with his current role at Gujarat Titans and wanted to continue his association with the franchise.
With Nehra remaining with Gujarat Titans, CSK eventually moved ahead with Zaheer Khan as their preferred option.
Zaheer Khan and MS Dhoni can work well together
The relationship between Zaheer Khan and MS Dhoni could be another important factor in this new CSK setup. Both were key members of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning team and have shared the dressing room at the international level.
Their familiarity with each other could help create a strong working relationship as CSK begin a new phase.
