Brazilian football superstar Neymar could face a six-match suspension following his controversial red card during Santos’ 1-1 draw against Bahia in the Brazilian Serie A. The 34-year-old forward has reportedly
been referred to Brazil’s Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) over an alleged breach of the protocol popularly known as the Vinícius Júnior rule.
The incident took place during a heated confrontation with Bahia midfielder Rodrigo Nestor. Neymar covered his mouth while arguing with his opponent, prompting the referee to consult the video assistant referee (VAR) before showing the Santos star a straight red card.

Why Neymar was sent off against Bahia
The controversy began during the match between Santos and Bahia, when Neymar and Nestor became involved in a verbal altercation. Nestor subsequently complained about the Brazilian forward’s comments, claiming they were disrespectful to both him and his club.
Although the exact words exchanged between the players could not be established, Neymar’s decision to cover his mouth became a major point of contention. The referee reviewed the incident before deciding to dismiss the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward.
Following his dismissal, Neymar reportedly attempted to confront Nestor again before being restrained by his teammates.
What is the Vinícius Júnior rule?
The so-called Vinícius Júnior rule is associated with efforts to combat racism and discriminatory behaviour in football. The protocol gained attention following an incident involving Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior and Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni in February 2026, when allegations of racial abuse sparked widespread debate.
The measure targets situations in which players deliberately cover their mouths during confrontations, making it difficult for officials to identify potentially offensive or discriminatory remarks.
Neymar denies allegations as suspension threat grows
Neymar acknowledged that covering his mouth was a mistake but denied making abusive comments towards Nestor. He also criticised his opponent’s conduct during the confrontation, arguing that the incident had been exaggerated.
The Brazilian forward now faces the possibility of a suspension that could significantly affect Santos’ remaining domestic campaign. Reports indicate that the disciplinary proceedings could result in a ban of up to six matches, depending on the tribunal’s assessment.
With the Brazilian Serie A season approaching its conclusion, a lengthy suspension would be a major setback for Santos, who are counting on their experienced forward during the decisive phase of the campaign.
