IPL 2027 auction set to be held in India, 2028 Mega Auction could move Overseas
The Indian Premier League is set for an interesting change in its auction plans, with the IPL 2027 auction reportedly scheduled
to take place in India. According to a report by Cricbuzz, the auction for the 2027 season is expected to return to home soil after the league hosted its recent auctions outside the country.
The development comes after the IPL held its auctions overseas for three consecutive editions. Dubai hosted the 2024 auction, while the 2025 mega auction was conducted in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The IPL 2026 auction was subsequently held in Abu Dhabi.

The return to India for the 2027 auction would mark a change in the league’s recent approach to hosting its player bidding events. The 2027 auction will be a mini auction, with franchises expected to make additions and adjustments to their existing squads rather than undertake a complete rebuild.
However, the bigger development could come a year later. The IPL 2028 season is expected to be preceded by the next mega auction, and reports suggest that the event could once again be taken overseas.
Mega auctions are particularly significant in the IPL calendar as they involve a much larger squad reshuffle compared to the annual mini auctions. Franchises are required to plan their retentions and releases carefully before entering the bidding process, making the venue and format of the event a major point of interest.
The IPL has previously demonstrated its willingness to take major auction events outside India, with the 2025 mega auction in Jeddah becoming the first mega auction to be held in Saudi Arabia.
For now, the reported plan is for the IPL 2027 auction to be staged in India, while the 2028 mega auction could potentially return to an overseas venue. The final venues and detailed auction regulations, however, will depend on official announcements from the BCCI and IPL authorities.
