Indian cricket has found itself at one of those selection crossroads where the difficult part isn’t identifying talent, but is creating space for all of it. Two names- Sanju Samson and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi,
representing cricket at two very different stages of their career. Samson has always had to fight back and spend years waiting with faith before putting up a remarkable show to guide India to their second consecutive and third overall T20 World Cup earlier this year. On the other hand, we have a 15-year-old whose extraordinary rise has forced his way into India’s plans much earlier than anyone would have ever expected.
Now, both are competing for essentially the same spot. But would that mean one’s rise would come at the expense of another’s career?
Sanju Samson Has Finally Made his Case
Samson, who has been in and out of the team for as long as one remembers, finally made an impact with his bat and had a defining T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. During the tournament, he scored 321 runs in five innings at an average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 199.37. He also finished as India’s leading scorer and won the ICC Player of the Tournament award. Samson also recorded three successive fifties in the final matches and played a key role in guiding the side to glory.

Yet, his place wasn’t completely secure afterwards. He could only score five runs against Ireland and 28 runs against England before returning to the squad for the Afghanistan series.
Arrival of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Sooryavanshi has been one of the most defining phenomena of Indian cricket in recent times. His rise has been impossible to ignore. The 15-year-old lad had a historical campaign during the IPL 2026, and even though he couldn’t guide the Rajasthan Royals to their second IPL title, Sooryavanshi has etched his name into the record books. He bagged almost every individual award after finishing with 776 runs with a strike rate of 237.30 and won the Orange Cap. Sooryavanshi also hit 72 sixes during the season.

Owing to his record-breaking campaign, Sooryavanshi’s international introduction followed soon. After a couple of initial setbacks, he went on to become the youngest-ever T20I half-centurion. During the Zimbabwe tour, he scored 151 runs at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 196.10. These numbers showed exactly why he couldn’t be ignored.

No. While the youngster got India call-up for the Afghanistan series in India, he wasn’t included in the playing XI. Sanju Samson suffered a setback in the opening game, but went on to record two back-to-back fifties, giving India solid starts in both matches and helped Men in Blue complete a series sweep. Though fans were excited to see Sooryavanshi make his maiden international appearance on India soil, head coach Gautam Gambhir has made it clear that the youngster would have to wait. According to the former opener, India is going to stick with the opening combination of Samson and Abhishek Sharma considering their experience.
It means patience is the key for Sooryavanshi. But that also comes as a clear challenge for the veteran- keep performing.
If he continues to produce at the same level he did in T20 World Cup 2026, there is little reason to view the Bihar batter as his replacement. However, if his inconsistency returns, the conversation could change real quickly given Vaibhav keeps converting opportunities.
