On Wednesday evening India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja celebrated his return to ODI cricket with a social media post. The star all-rounder posted an Instagram story showing his back to the camera, his blue
India jersey carrying the name ‘JADEJA’ and his familiar No. 8. Two folded-hands emojis and a raised-fist emoji were placed below the picture. There was no caption and no explanation but it was clear that he was grateful for the return. This story was posted just after BCCI had announced India’s squad for the three-match ODI series against West Indies, with Jadeja returning to the 50-over side after an eight-month absence.
His inclusion came at a time when questions had grown over his future in the format, particularly after a difficult series against New Zealand and the emergence of other options. For a player who has spent more than a decade in India colours, the photograph carried a quiet significance. Jadeja has been part of World Cup campaigns, Champions Trophy teams and several memorable ODI victories. At 37 every return comes with a different context and he will be keen to cement his place in the setup.
Jadeja gets another ODI opportunity against West Indies
India will host West Indies for three ODIs, beginning on September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram before the series moves to Guwahati and New Chandigarh. Shubman Gill will lead the side, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli also included while several players are away with the Asian Games squad. Jadeja’s return comes after his last ODI appearance against New Zealand in January. India lost that three-match series 1-2, and he endured a forgettable series. He scored 43 runs across the three games and went wicketless from his 23 overs.

With Axar Patel continuing to offer an all-round option and other players competing for places, the uncertainty around Jadeja’s ODI future was understandable. However the veteran all-rounder has played more than 200 ODIs for India, scoring over 2800 runs and taking more than 220 wickets. His value has never been restricted to one discipline either. His left-arm spin, athleticism in the field and ability to contribute lower down the order have made him one of India’s most dependable limited-overs players for much of his career. The selectors have now given him another opportunity to prove that there is still a role for him.
