Suryakumar Yadav’s impressive captaincy record
There is no doubt that his captaincy record was impressive. Since taking over as India’s T20I captain in 2024, Suryakumar led the team to 42 wins in 50 matches with a remarkable 84 per cent winning rate. Under him, India won every bilateral T20I series they played during his captaincy stint and also lifted the 2025 Asia Cup. The biggest achievement came in 2026 when India successfully defended their T20 World Cup title.
It was not simply a case of taking a successful team and maintaining the wins. Suryakumar’s leadership was part of an aggressive brand of T20 cricket that India developed during this period. The team also became the first side to successfully defend the men’s T20 World Cup. His individual numbers were not good in the last few years and that was one reason for his removal.

His batting had clearly dipped. He scored 242 runs in the 2026 T20 World Cup, including an important unbeaten 84 against the USA but his IPL 2026 campaign was disappointing with only 270 runs. His post-2024 T20I numbers had also fallen considerably compared to the extraordinary levels he had produced earlier in his career.
So there was a good case for asking him to improve his batting. But removing him completely is a different decision. Other senior Indian players have often been given opportunities to play their way back into form. Suryakumar was coming off a period in which his team had won major titles. That makes the timing of the decision difficult to ignore.
Suryakumar himself admitted that the change surprised him. After spending weeks trying to understand the decision, he questioned why such a major change was necessary when India had been successful. The decision may ultimately prove correct. India clearly have an eye on the future, with Shreyas Iyer now being given the responsibility. But if the argument was about his batting form, giving him a little more time to recover while keeping his leadership might have been another option.
